Most experts in the field of hair replacement procedures and technology will typically divide the process into three distinct stages.  These are the replacement pre-operative, surgical, and post-operative stages.  Each stage has its own unique characteristics and there are certain steps that need to be taken and procedures to follow where your hair is involved.  The following should give you some basic information on these different stages of the entire hair replacement process from start to finish.

Pre-operative period

During this stage of the hair replacement process, you will consult with an experienced surgeon who will evaluate the condition of your scalp and determine the particular surgical procedure to use.  They will also be able to decide how many sessions will be necessary in order to complete the procedure. In recent years, there have been a number of technological advancements and other innovations in the hair replacement industry that millions of people have benefited from.  The most common replacement procedure is hair transplantation or grafting where small quantities of follicles are surgically moved from what is referred to as the “donor” area to the balding area in order to restore the hairline and fill in the scalp.  However, there are a few other hair replacement procedures that are also performed.

Flap surgery

This procedure uses a flap or flaps or hair donor tissue that is transplanted to the balding areas of the person’s scalp.  The flap is transplanted to the balding area in order to restore the person’s appearance.  A bald portion of the scalp is surgically removed and then replaced with a hair-bearing section of tissue in order to fill in the scalp and make it appear more natural.  [click to continue…]

As has been discussed in prior articles, hair replacement procedures are just as much of a benefit to women as they are to men, if not more so.  In order to understand why these different replacement procedures are beneficial, you need to understand the different phases of the hair growth cycle.  In many instances, the progression of these cycles will determine when the hair replacement surgical procedure needs to be done and when the client will receive the optimum benefit.

There are 3 phases of hair growth which are as follows:

Anagen or growth phase – this is oftentimes referred to as the active phase of growth.  This is when the hair cell roots are dividing and multiplying rapidly which adds to the shaft.  The hair typically grows about a centimeter for every 28 days.  This phase normally lasts between 2 and 7 years and the length of time is determined genetically.  Once this phase concludes, a signal is triggered and the growth cycle then shifts into the next growth phase.

Categen or transition phase – this occurs once the Anagen phase has ended.  It is also what indicates that the hair growth phase has ended.  This phase will last between 2 and 4 weeks while new follicles are being formed. [click to continue…]

Although hair is not as common in women as it is with men, there is still a need for many women today to undergo hair replacement surgery.  Suffice it to say, the reasons are oftentimes very gender specific.  For instance, men are more prone to genetic maladies such as male pattern baldness, whereas women are affected by hormonal changes later in life.  A replacement procedure can benefit men and women alike, so it is important to learn all you can regarding the type of hair replacement procedure you want to have done.

Although most professionals will tell you that men’s hair loss is more prevalent than women’s, it is still a problem where women are concerned and needs to be addressed.  Here are some statistics regarding women’s hair loss to be aware of: [click to continue…]

Here are some more considerations to be aware of anytime that you are contemplating having a surgical hair replacement procedure done.

Post image for How Do I Choose The Best Hair Replacement Procedure?

Anytime you are suffering with male pattern baldness or other conditions of this nature, you may be considering undergoing a hair replacement surgical procedure to correct the situation and restore your original appearance.  The replacement of lost or thinning hair using a surgical technique is rapidly becoming the most popular option on the market.  Additionally, hair replacement surgical techniques have been proven to be highly successful with most individuals who opt to have this procedure performed.

The extent of your hair loss will help you determine the hair replacement procedure that will work best for you.  So it is imperative that you do plenty of research before making the ultimate decision on which surgical procedure you want to undergo.  A simple search online will reveal hundreds of results for clinics and surgeons that are out there, which can make the decision-making challenging if not totally frustrating.  So what all goes into the decision making process?

Initially, you need to determine if hair replacement surgery is your best option or if it is even necessary.  A simple consultation with your family physician is an excellent starting point in the decision-making process as they may be able to determine if your hair loss has evolved to a point where this is the only option you have.  They may arrive at a couple of different conclusions based on your genetic history and other physical characteristics namely to have the surgery done or to try other alternatives first.

These other alternatives are prescribing Propecia or purchasing OTC Rogaine and trying them first.  The downside is that noticeable, positive results could take up to a year to occur.  Conversely, your physician may refer you to a hair replacement surgeon to discuss your case with.  This surgeon may recommend that you start a Propecia or Rogaine regimen prior to undergoing the surgical procedure and then resuming it once the surgery has been performed.  This is very common and the benefits are well known.

Although the hair replacement process may involve undergoing several procedures and considerable expense, you will benefit quicker with a surgical procedure than if you rely on either Propecia or Rogaine to achieve positive results.  Regardless of whether or not your personal physician and surgeon recommend surgery, the decision ultimately rests on your shoulders.  You need to research everything about this before jumping in to ensure that you are not making a costly decision and achieve the results you want.
